Currently, it is common to take the cell phone to the bathroom for distraction while performing physiological needs. However, this practice can have serious health consequences. Spending long periods sitting on the toilet looking at the phone can weaken pelvic muscles and cause problems such as hemorrhoids.
Colorectal surgeon, Dr. Lai Xue, explains that the position in which the body remains while sitting on the toilet, with the rectum in a lower position than when sitting on a sofa, creates additional pressure in the area. Gravity compresses the glutes, affects blood circulation, and can lead to hemorrhoids when the veins and blood vessels of the rectum enlarge and fill with blood.
Staying too long in the bathroom can also lead to another problem called rectal prolapse, which involves part of the large intestine sliding down and out of place. The general recommendation is not to exceed 10 minutes in the bathroom, with an ideal time of 5 to 10 minutes for performing physiological needs.
In case of difficulty evacuating, Dr. Xue advises not to stay in the bathroom trying for too long, but instead, walk to stimulate the intestinal muscles and facilitate evacuation. It is also suggested to increase water intake, consume fiber-rich foods, or seek professional help in case of recurrent problems.
